Need to have more respect to our religion!

I believe in H. H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Once I had been to his Bangalore ashram. We call him Guruji with love. Guruji asked one simple question that day, "How many of us have read the Gita?" There were 3500 to 4000 people were seating, unfortunately very few people raised their hands! Then Guruji made us understand, why should we read the Gita? From that day I started reading Gita.

Actually Hindu people do not have enough respect towards their religion. We should see how Muslim or Christian people's respect and commitment to their religion. Most of all of them have read the Quran or The Bible at least once. It is really very nice thing. I appreciate them. They are really respecting Allah and Jesus Christ, and they do read the Quran and the bible often.

One more thing, I noticed, most of Hindu people often make joke on Hindu god or goddess. Many times I saw people play a drama and joke on The Ramayana or The Mahabharata, to make people laugh. I never saw any Muslim or Christian people making a joke on Allah or Jesus. What a great respect they have for God! And we, Hindus, often take God’s name as a Joke! We should learn from Muslims and Christians.

Need to have more respect to this great religion. In fact everyone should have respect for all religions. Don't make joke out of it!

Hi Sagar,

Just to add to what you have written, its very strange to see that people living in the US are far better than us. They attend weekend classes to lear about Mahabharat , Ramanayanam and Geetha.
We, living in India claim to be patriotic but hardly know our epics.
Its high time we help ourselves..
Thanks for initiating this Sagar..

Hey Sagar,

Religion is a personal affair and more so among Hindus where we have not 1 but many gods. Even the Gita has many versions, so does ramayana. So Hinduism can not be an organized religion that can force people to obey one version, i god. Then its inevitable that Hindus are relaxed about their region and beliefs and are light-hearted about the humane aspects in their mythological heroes.

Secondly, it may not be right to say that most Muslims and Christians read their holy texts.
Thats just propaganda, part of an effort to organize religion. In educated west, these led to lots of questioning and for instance, the church-going public decreased in US over past few years. In second and third world countries, these same efforts to organize Islam led to the birth many terrorist outfits.

My point is simple: Let Hinduism be a personal affair. Guys who see as guiding philosophy can embrace it. Others would like to look at it as cultural heritage. These kind of guys would take creative liberties and till now, there is no evidence to show that Hindus did not like seeing their gods depicted in movies and stage. we can let it be that way. It is this freedom that never ever produced a Hindu terrorist who is blind abt his religion. beacuse of the plurality within Hinduism, there is more broadmindedness within Hindus. It is this freedom that makes Indians live in peace with each other despite the differences of caste, language etc..while u cant say the same about different sects within Islam.

I hope i made my point. Thoughful post. Keep going.

Yes Amar,

I very much agree with you, it is okay that we have many gods and many version of geeta or ramayana or mahabharat.. but still why should we make fun of our own religion?
I am not saying that, we should have agression towards our religion but at least respect should be there.

You are correct that this freedom has never created any hindu terrorist, but still I feel hurted when I see people making fun out of Lord Krishan or Rama or any other religious characters.

Anyway you made your point clear.
Thanks for your valuable inputs.
